Siemens is ready to expand its tech portfolio in wireless charging for EVs. And it plans to do this by investing in and collaborating with WiTricity, a trailblazer in wireless EV charging.
A Game-changing Investment
Siemens recently acquired a minority stake in WiTricity, a US-based wireless charging tech company, by investing USD 25 million. Siemens predicts the EV charging market to reach a total of USD 2 billion by 2028 in North America and Europe alone. And with WiTricity, the tech company aims to advance the efficiency of wireless electrical charging for light commercial and passenger EV vehicles.
Adopting WiTricity’s EV charging tech under Siemens’ global footprint may become a game-changer in the wireless charging market. Through their collaboration, the companies aim to reduce deployment time, enhance driver convenience, and globally standardize wireless charging for vehicles at a lower cost. And they aim to achieve this by working with OEMs and infrastructure partners worldwide.
Advancing a Novel Technology
Wireless charging technology works through a charging pad that is mounted on top or laid into the ground. All a driver has to do is park over the charging pad and walk away. The pad exchanges power with a receiving coil on the underside of the EV through a magnetic field that transfers energy. Resonate induction also allows the system to efficiently charge various vehicles, from SUVs to low-slung sports cars.
The technology may be just what we need to completely automate vehicles as it has the potential to eliminate the need for manual charging.Â
WiTricity – an Overview
A pioneer in wireless charging for EVs, WiTricity has been leading the development and administration of magnetic resonance tech in commercial and passenger vehicles since 2007. With an extensive patent portfolio and decades-long collaborations with automotive OEMs, the company has set the foundation for global EV wireless charging standards like SAE, ISO, and GB.Â
The company actively works on developing its core technology, along with additional intellectual properties, to take its spectacular invention to new heights. Today, automakers and Tier 1 suppliers look to WiTricity to eliminate plug-in charging and accelerate EV adoption.
