The cause for the occasion is the small batch of BMW iX5 Hydrogen vehicles that will be serviced at the end of this year for testing and demonstration purposes.

The In-house production of the BMW iX5

The BMW Group‘s internal hydrogen competency centre will now produce extremely effective fuel cell systems. One of the key components of the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, this technology produces a high continuous output of 125 kW/170 horsepower.

It combines a high-performance battery designed specifically for this car and an electric motor that uses fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology to enable its powertrain to produce 275 kW/374 horsepower. For the limited production run, the development team combined the powerful drive system, which consists of two hydrogen tanks, a fuel cell, and an electric motor, onto the current BMW X5 platform.

During the final round of winter testing in Sweden at the beginning of this year, the BMW iX5 Hydrogen confirmed its exceptional all-around usability, even at very low temperatures. Also, a unique propulsion system for the premium market will be added to the company’s portfolio thanks to the combination of fuel cells and high-performance batteries. The BMW Group is taking a visionary and leading position in this technology to achieve a more varied transition to zero-emission transportation.
